Abstract

The methods of combination analysis such as (modified) Weaver's method,Thomas's method and Kohda's K method are much applied to dividing and grouping regions. These methods have become important for the geographical study. But,examining these methods, it becomes clear that they have several problems. For example, the methods with the sum of deviation squares such as Weaver's method, etc. impose on the criterion that the percentage of the elements adopted in a combination are equal each other as much as possible. But, this criterion doesn't have rational basis not only for general element series but also for the crop series in the crop rotation regions. Likewise, the methods with standard value such as Kohda's K method have arbitrariness on setting standard values. Then, taking these problems into consideration, the writer presents "standard value A method", whtich is a tentative name, as a new method. If the number of all elements is n, the standard value A can be expressed as follows: A = 100/n In the process to determine the number and identities of elements adopted in the combination, analizers pick up the elements whose percentages are not less than A orderly from the top element. This way means that the elements whose percentages are even less than the average percentage (A) aren't worth representative elements in a given region. Consequently, this standard value can be consented to as a persuadable and rational criterion relatively by almost people, and the contents which the standard value means are clear. Therefore, this method is more excellent with respect to the idea of the combination analysis method than the former methods. Finally, the writer tried to determine the type of the combination of crops and livestocks for each of 143 cities, towns and villages in San-in district with the standard value A method. As a result, it has become clear that this method can pick up main crops and livestocks more appropriately than the former methods and it is more superior to them. That is to say, it can be said that this method has not only rationality with respect to the idea of the analysis method, but also practical effectivity relative to the former methods.
