In 五体清文鑑 (Wu-t'i Ch'ing-wen-chien), which was compiled in 清 (Ching) dynasty around the end of the 18 th century, we find a text in Written New Uigur in Arabic characters with its pronounciation described in Machu characters. So far the structure of New Uigur which appeared in this text has never been studied.
In the first chapter the author, referring to the orthography of Manchu of those days as well as to contemporary New Uigur, inferred the sound values of the Manchu character and reconstructed the phoneme system of this New Uigur in Manchu transcription.
In the second chapter the author showed that although the written language, which is given in Arabic characters, is a traditional one which is descended from Chagatay, the transcribed form in Manchu characters shows a rather colloquial nature of New Uigur and is closely related with the northern dialects of contemporary New Uigur, such as Hami, Turfan, Kucha. One of the peculiarities which are seen in both the northern dialects and the studied language is such a phenomenon that Arabic origin v changes into g; e.g. hava</hagua/‘climate’, vaqt</guaq/‘time’.
Further study on its morphology and lexicon will shed much more light on the structure of this language.
