Description

1. The lake Pa-Yu Chi is situated at 22°44′ north latitude and 120°53′ east longitude, on the subalpine zone of the Formosan backbone mountains of 2, 040m above sea level. It is a slender shape lake which extends from NW to SE. The morphometrical data are summarized as follows:<br>length of the shore line 1.99km<br>surface area 5.13ha<br>maximum depth 1.5m<br>development of shore line 2.48<br>2. The north-east side of the shore of the lake is surrounded by pampas grass bog, but the other parts of the shore are covered with subalpine broad-leaved forest which is dominated with Stranvaesia niitakayamensis and Adinandra lasiostyla.<br>3. Many kinds of birds, which belong mainly to Timaliinae, Hirundinidae, Apodidae and Turdinae, inhabit the surrounding forests.<br>4. Aquatic flora and fauna are very simple. Chara sp. is only one large aquatic plant. In fauna many carps, large and small, which were reared by Pintung Province Government, live. Melosira granulata and Eudiaptomus formosus are dominant species in phytoplankton and zooplankton respectively, but the population density of these are very low.<br>5. The lake water shows neutral reaction and is poor in nutrients. Total evapolation residues are only 20mg/l. The result of the chemical analysis shows that the main constituent is calcium bicarbonate.<br>6. Considered from the low primary productivity, the sake belongs to the oligotrophic lake.
