This paper deals with the transitional period at the beginning of metal cutting. Firstly, a shear line figure was drawn up for the cutting by negative rake tool, applying the method of theory of plasticity to the problem of penetrating a rigid wedge into perfectly plastic material. Next, as a result of cutting experiments, an equation was set up to represent the transition of friction angle between the chip and the tool face at the beginning of cutting. Combining above two performances, we analysed the transition of cutting mechanism during the transitional cutting period. Additionally, from above analysis, we introduced the equations which, knowing the friction angle, give cutting forces, cutting ratio, and contact of chip at the stationary cutting process. Finally, we examined this theory by orthogonal-cutting experiments of lead.
