抄録

It is difficult to obtain accurate and smooth holes on plastics by drilling. The object of the present research is to examine the cutting phenomena in drilling of various plastics. The main results obtained are as follows : (1) The torque of drill increases linearly with the depth of hole, which shows that the forces on the margin are distributed uniformly along its length. (2) The margin exhibits both frictional and cutting resistances. The cutting action of the margin seems to be a characteristic phenomenon in drilling of plastics. (3) In order to avoid the chipping around the edge of the hole, it is effective to use the drill having the very short margins with the relief angle, and having the roundness at the outer corner of cutting edges.
