Residual compressive stresses are produced at the surface layers by the carburizing and quenching treatment. Their changes due to aging at room temperature and also by repeated stressing at a stress amplitude below the fatigue limit have been reported previously. In this paper their changes due to repeated stressing at the four stress amplitudes, two being below and the other two above the fatigue limit, are reported. In repeated stressing, the numbers of repetitions were selected so as to give the same cycle ratios. Residual stresses were measured by the etching method. It has been made clear that surface residual stresses decrease as usual in the first Stage of fading, but increase noticeably in the second stage due to the aging effect. Moreover, the authors have found that the larger the stress amplitude is, the greater the effect of accelerating aging is and also that the higher the stress amplitude is, the larger the effect of fading after the aging is competed is.
