Description
For the purpose of inquiring into the cutting mechanism in the precision finishing operations such as grinding, honing and superfinishing, and of investigating the comparison of cutting action between the grain and the single point cutting tool, an experimental research has been carried out about the process of formation of chip using the cutting tool which has the pyramid shape with large vertex angle as abrasive grain. Owing to the fact that the stock removal becomes smaller and the volume of swelling-up becomes larger with increasing the cutting edge angle of tool, the stock removal in the cutting operation by the abrasive grain will be smaller than the volume obtained from the cutting depth of grain and the height of swelling-up reaches as high as 80% of the cutting depth. However, as the cutting speed increases, the swelling-up decreases and the stock removal becomes larger. Upon investigating the shape of chip in the range of cutting speed of 0∼2400m/min, it has been cleared that the cutting mechanism of grinding is essentially different from that of honing and superfinishing.
