The characteristics of the leakage loss through the idealized labyrinth packing were obtained by an experiment using an idealized model labyrinth. These results are useful as the standard data to compare the effects of the actual labyrinth packings. The fundamental characteristics of the staggered type labyrinth packing were also made clear by the experimental works. Especially as regards the effects of the counter-throttling fins the following results were found out : The small counter-throttling fins are useful enough : The leakage loss increases excellently, when the counter-throttling fins are put in a certain state in a pocket or the thickness of the fins are greater than a certain propotion. Moreover, by considering the pressure distribution of the labyrinth packing and the flow patterns, which were observed by using"smoke-tunnel", the function of the staggered type were made clear.
