An experimental study is made on the effects of the following two factors on the life of AISI Type 347 stainless steel under the cyclic thermal stress fatigue conditions : (1) The mean temperature of the thermal cycling, (2) The ratio of the constrained strain to the total strain, which is equal to the amount of the thermal expansion, that is the constrain ratio. The effect of the thermal cycling in the former experiment generally consisted of two parts, one of which was caused by the thermal stresses and the other by the temperature, and they could not be distinguished from each other. In order to distinguish them, the latter experiment was achieved and their independent information have been obtained.
