An axial-flow compressor was designed and operated to investigate the blade element characteristics as well as overall performance. The experimental results were in a gooa agreement with the calculated values. In course of the yaw-meter traverse measurements, it was found that the overall performance was deteriolated by blade contamination in accordance with the sum of the accumulated operating time. As every body knows, owing to the blade contamination the efficiency was degraded, and in addition, the air turning angle of the cascade was decreased. As the result of the latter effect, the over all performance shifted towards the low volume flow range, just as the same matter occurs when the stagger angle increased. The degree of the deviation from the design performance was unexpectedly severe, and we realized that this problem seemed very important in plactical operation of the axial-flow compressor.
