Abstract

Providing a bevel land at a cutting edge strengthens the edge against impacts. It enables a more unwearable but brittler tool material to be employed in face-milling for a better milling performance. As example of this potential developement, TiC cermet is studied to be utilized in face-milling of steels. A single braded cutter is used in fundamental experiments, where the effects of the bevel land and the radial rake on cutting forces, low speed breakage and high speed breakage, and the comparison between the cermet and several carbides are studied. Based on the results of those tests, a throw-away type cermet cutter is made so as to obey practical demands. A test run of the cutter apparently proves its utility.
