In order to clarify the effect of mean stress on the hardness change by the cyclic stressing, we measured the micro-Vickers hardness of 0.13%-carbon steel, which had been stressed under completely or partly reversed plane bending. In partly reversed bending tests, the ratio of mean stress to stress amplitude was 0.52. Hardness impressions spaced at 0.5mm intervals were made across the cross-section of stressed specimens, and the load was 1000 grams. Summary of the results is as follows : (1) At stresses above the endurance limit, the increase in hardness depends mainly on the effect of alternating stress amplitude. (2) But, at stresses below the endurance limit, the maximum stress is an effective factor for the increase in hardness.
