Description
<p>This paper aims to examine the aspects of Japanese language education from the perspective of empowerment. Firstly it defines empowerment in terms of relatedness, secondly it considers the relation between empowerment and multicultural coexistence and the roles of education in achieving multicultural coexistence, and finally it examines the aspects of language education, particularly Japanese language education, that fit these roles. With the stance taken here of keeping relatedness as a criterion, viewing "culture" and "language" dynamically, and relating in education the aspects of language as "object" and "tool", we examine the aspects of Japanese language education that suit the needs of learners and society in terms of empowerment, including the following points: clarification of goals, building human relationships, building spaces for participation, development of teaching materials.</p>
