Abstract

<p>Some have expressed the opinion that the concept of Role Language (yakuwarigo) is not necessary for teaching Japanese as a foreign language or for the training of Japanese language teachers. In response, I maintain the utility of knowledge about role language, arguing from the following two points:</p><p>1. Role language is not merely a special type of language seen in manga and anime. We become familiar with the typology of speech styles associated with particular characters (that is, role language) as stereotypical knowledge. In this sense, it is possible to understand all spoken language as possessing characteristics of role language.</p><p>2. Learners of Japanese may be seen to play the role of learners of Japanese in society. Teachers of Japanese are in the position of helping learners to invent their character, and need to have an awareness of this when providing instruction.</p>
