Description

Three specimens of Sorex minutus gracillimus Thomas, an adult male from Rishiri Island, Hokkaido, which was new to the Island, and two from Sakhalin, were studied. From these specimens and the data given by N. Kuroda, Goodwin etc., gracillimus may be defined as follows : body and skull as large as median sized typical race (tables 1, 2), but distinguished from the latter by slightly narrower facial region (table 3) and distinct tricolored pattern of the adult summer pelage, rather similar to the adult winter pelage of S. araneus.
