Description
This research explains statistically individual variation of status orientation by construction image of occupational status. Status orientation is one of value consciousness. People who have strong status orientation find it important to get a high status occupation. Construction image of occupational status means subjective perception of overall occupational hierarchy. The significance of research on people’s perception of occupational status is not limited to making status index such as the occupational prestige score. The present study suggests the use of construction image of occupational status to understand strata consciousness better by explaining status orientation. Previous measurement method of occupational status had some problem and they could not measure construction image of occupational status. Therefore, I devised the new measuring method of construction image named ‘the free-measuring method’ and conducted original social survey. Results of data analyses show the four points below. (1)Individual‘s construction image of occupational status consists of not individual occupations but cluster of occupations. (2) There is no consensus among people on the number of strata of occupational stratification. (3)People who think occupational stratification consist of larger number of strata have stronger status orientation. (4)Status orientation has no relationship with perceived difference of social status between occupational strata.
