Abstract

     The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between social skill and employment status among Japanese young men. An internet survey was conducted in February 2013. Respondents were male employee living across Japan aged between 15-34 (n = 872). Respondents' social skill was measured by using KiSS-18 (Kikuchi 1988). Statistical analyses show that men with higher social skill tend to be a regular worker. The significant effect of social skill on employment status remained when age, education, and generalized self- efficacy were controlled. In addition, years of working after school had no effect on the level of social skill. These results mean there is a possibility that social skill affects employment status among Japanese young men. We can think that Japanese companies evaluate applicants for employment based on their social skill as one of selection criteria.
