Abstract

Hydrodynamic force exerting on a submerged square pillar in sub- or super-critical flows were investigated experimentally. The Fr number and the ratio of depth h0 to pillar height k were changed in the range of 0.658 - 1.428 and 1-2.5, respectively. It is found that the drag coefficient Cd and the lift coefficient Cl of a square pillar are constant when the flow is super-critical flow (Fr ≥ 1), on the other hand, when the flow is sub-critical flow (Fr < 1), Cd and Cl are affected by h0/k. The value of Cd becomes constant when h0/k > 2.0, while the values of Cl is fluctuated in subcritical flow. A flow chart of a estimation of Cd of a square pillar, which is emerged/submerged according to flow phenomenon, is also shown.
