Abstract

Selection method based on expected progeny differences (EPD) was studied for Japanese Brown sires in Kumamoto Prefecture. The traits considered were beef marbling score (BMS), carcass weight (CWT), rib eye area (REA), rib thickness (RT) and subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT). The aggregate genotype was assumed to be carcass price, which was predicted from linear combination of the five carcass traits. Selection of the best 10 from 30 available sires was examined with various selection criteria. In unrestricted selection, selection was carried out based on the predicted aggregate genotype or EPD for the individual traits. In restricted selection, linear programming (LP) technique which maximize the aggregate genotype while constraining genetic gain(s) of the carcass trait(s) into desired level(s) was applied to several practical selection cases. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1) Although the selection based on BMS alone gave the largest genetic gain in BMS, it accompanied with negative genetic changes in CWT, REA and RT. The result indicates that the selection on BMS alone will not be supported in spite of the fact that BMS is the major component of the aggregate genotype. 2) In all the cases of restricted selection with LP technique, the genetic gains of individual traits were adequately controlled and the economic gains could be kept sufficiently large except in the case where the genetic gains of all traits were restricted. When BMS and RT were proportionally restricted, the sires with better BMS and RT were selected but the sire with lower aggregate genotype was not selected. From these results, it is concluded that the selection method with LP technique is useful for sire selection in the conditions where information on EPD for multiple traits is available.
