Description
This experiment has been carried to make clear the relation between the condition of the hide of living farm animal and quality of the leather made from the parti ular hide. As the material, cattle is used as it is the main source of raw hide in Japan. Formerly the author has published two memoirs with regard to this experiment; one is about the thickness of hide in living cattle, and the other is about the weight, area and thickness of raw hide. Now he intents to report on the histological differences in the cattle hide by the body location and sex.<br>Small pieces of the hides were sampled. to be studied histologically from 24 different locations of the body of two cows and bulls of the black bleed of Japanese cattle after they were slaughtered. From this investigation the author found that there was no histological difference in hide between Japanese cattle and that of other mam-malia, but the studies extended on following items in accordance with the location in body and sex: -the thickness of hide; the uniformity of thickness of hide of principal part; the thickness of epidermis, horny layer and germi native layer; the thickness of corium, reticular-layer and papillary layer; the width, and crossing state of the collagen fibres in reticular layer; the elastin fibres in papillary and reticular layer; the density and width of hair; the percentage of hair to wool; the density of erectorpili muscles; the type, depth, size and density of sweat gland; the depth, size and density of sebaceous gland.
