説明
In mammals, it is well established that the motor activity of the gastro-intestinal tract can be regulated by the hypothalamus. Because of different structure and function of the central nervous system in chickens, the central regulation of the gastro-intestinal tract does not seem to be the same as in mammals. The present investigation was undertaken in an attempt to study this problem, and the effects of the lesions made in the hypothalamus were observed on the motility of caecum of chickens.
The results obtained were as follows.
After the lesion of the anterior areas of hypothalamus, there were 9 out of 10 cases, which showed an increase in both frequency and amplitude. Whereas one case showed a decrease in contraction frequency with an increase in amplitude. On the other hand, the lesion of the posterior areas of hypothalamus gave rise to a decrease in both frequency and amplitude in 2 out of 3 cases, whereas one case showed an increase in amplitude with a decrease in contraction frequency.
When the site of the hypothalamic lesions involved the preoptic area, Nucl. preopticus medialis, Nucl. hypothalamicus anterior medialis and Nucl. paraventricularis magnocellularis, the change in motility of the caecum was resulted; namely, an increase in contraction and amplitude. On the other hand, the lesion of the posterior areas of Nucl. hypothalamicus lateralis of hypothalamus was followed by a decrease in contraction frequency and amplitude of the caecum.
