説明

The skeletal muscles of normal and starved sheep were investigated histochemically to determine the relationship between β-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (β-HBD)activity of individual muscle fibers and their fatty change in starvation. In normal sheep, β-HBD activity varied strikngly among five fiber types classified by SUZUKKI. The β-HBD reaction was negative or very weak in the A fibers, negative in the B fibers, and weak in the C fibers. The D fibers reacted moderately for β-HBD. The E fibers gave a very strong reaction for β-HBD. The fibers having low to moderate activity of myosin adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase)showed a weak to strong reaction for β-HBD, whereas most of the fibers with high myosin ATPase activity reacted negatively for β-HBD. In starvation, no significant changes in βHBD activity of each fiber type were observed. The fibers that exhibited fatty changegave a positive reaction for β-HBD. The results are interpreted as indicating that the fatty change in muscle fibers in starvation is closely related to the ability of them to utilize fatty acids or lipid.
