Description

In order to determine the effect of various feeding conditions on the cecal pH, the present experiment was carried out using 4 months old Single Comb White Leghorn cockerels, and the following results were obtained. The cecal pH was lowered by feeding of wheat grain. The HCl acidified feed also tended to reduce the cecal pH, but the NaHCO3 alkalized feed did not affect the cecal pH. Addition of HCl to the conventional diet reduced pH of the blood which was drawn from the ulnar cutaneous vein, and the cecal pH decreased in accordance with the reduction of the blood pH. The cecal pH was always lower than the pH of lower ileum when a conventional diet was fed. The pH of lower ileum decreased to the almost same level as the cecal pH when a semi-purified diet was supplied. No obvious difference in the cecal pH was observed in various conditions of feeding, such as ad libitum feeding, forced feeding, fasting or re-feeding after fasting. There was no diurnal change in the cecal pH, which showed a fairly constant value of 6. 8. The pH of cecal mucosa was the highest in apex, showing almost a constant pH value of 6.8. Krebs-Ringer phosphate buffer solution or 0.9% NaCl solution was infused into the cecum and the small intestine, and it was found that the cecum had a stronger buffer action than the small intestine, especially from the acid-side.
