説明

Effect of the rearing in mountainous regions on the productivity of beef cattle was discussed by means of a serial experiment through their life span until the slaughter experiment as a demonstration of the theory founded upon the results of the experiment on the acclimatization o the cardiorespiratory function of mice to the high altitude environment. The growth and the body type of feeder cattle were discussed in the present report. Subjects were 232 male calves born at SOTOYAMA Branch of IWATE Prefectural Animal Husbandry Experiment Station (700-1, 000m in altitude ) and Tohoku National Agricultural Experiment Station (150m in altitude) for recent five years from 1969 to 1973, containing three species of cattle, Japanese Black, Japanese Shorthorn and Hereford. The body type of each species in the final stage of the rearing at which the age of six months was not deformed by the rearing in mountainous regions. The early growth of body weight and the body size at the final stage of rearing of feeder cattle reared in mountainous regions were smaller than those at sea level. Feeder cattle reared in mountainous regions presented the following exterior characteristics: hard hair, middle part of the body short, erected hock joint, body width broad, muscles and tendons well developed, joints of extremities well shaped, hoof dense and strong, elastic and balanced action. These characteristics might be evaluated as rearing effects in mountainous regions.
