Relationships between body weight. FCM yield and gross feed efficiency index-FCM/K equals to [FCM/2(6W+FCM)]×100-were investigated using 119 records of body weight at first lactation and averages of early three successive lactations corrected to first lactation from 1953 to 1968 in Holstein Herd of Koiwai Farm, one of the biggest private cattle breeding farms in Japan. Results obtained here are summarized as following. (1) Averages of main traits were 558kg in body weight, 139.0cm in withers height, 4, 479kg in corrected FCM yield and 28.5% in FCM/K, respectively. (2) The heritability of FCM/K estimated by dam-daughter correlation was 0.51. (3) The correlation between body weight and FCM yield was insignificant, -0.045. (4) The correlation between FCM yield and FCM/K highly significant 0. 895***. (5) The simple correlation between body weight and FCM/K was significant, -0.466***, while partial correlation between them holding FCM yield constant was very high, -0.955***. (6) Accordingly, middle size cows weighing about 550-630kg seemed to be more profitable in general from both FCM yield and gross feed efficiency, although individual variations were very large.
