This trial was conducted, utilizing four fistulated Holstein cows in a Latin-square design, to investigate the effects of level of hay intake on VFA production and other condition in the rumen of cow. Timothy hay was offered at levels of 4, 6, 8 and 10kg, respectively, per day. The concentration of ammonia nitrogen and VFA, and pH values were determined on rumen liguor taken immediately before feeding (09:00a.m.) and at hourly intervals over a 11-hr. period after feeding. The principal results obtained are as follows. Levels of hay intake had important and predictable effects on the concentration of ammonia nitrogen and VFA, and pH values in rumen liquor. Except for propionic acid and n-valeric acid, all components investigated showed significant changes by levels of hay intake. Prediction equations expressing the response to levels of hay intake are shown. The concentration of ammonia nitrogen and total VFA increased lineally as levels of hay intake increased, whereas pH droped. The per cent of the total VFA as acetic acid and iso-valeric acid decreased lineally as levels of hay intake increased, but the per cent of butyric acid increased.
