Description
Digestion and fattening experiments were conducted to estimate the feeding value of ammoniated rice hulls (ARH) for dairy beef cattle. Digestion experiment of ARH was carried out with 12 Holstein beef cattle. The control group was fed the basal diet (timothy hay and concentrate 3:7 by ADM content), two experimental groups were fed the basal diet and ARH (group ARH 30% was fed the basal diet and ARH 7:3, group ARH 20% was fed 8:2 by ADM). Each group was fed 7.8kg per day. Fattening experiment was carried out with 20 Holstein beef cattle for 43 weeks. Each group was fed as follows. Group 1 was fed concentrate and rice straw 8:2, group 2 was fed concentrate and rice hulls 8:2, group 3 was fed concentrate and ARH 8:2, group 4 was fed concentrate and ARH 9:1 by ADM. All groups were fed according to the TDN feeding standard. In addition, urea was added to the rice straw and rice hulls groups to keep the same nitrogen level as that of ARH added groups. At the end of experiment, all beef cattle were slaughtered and examined for carcass qualities. The results obtained were as follows.
(Digestion experiment)
The chemical composition of ARH was as follows; dry matter 91.70%, crude protein 7.37%, crude fat 1.11%, NFE25.07%, crude fiber 37.72% and crude ash 20.43%. There was no significant difference between the groups ARH30% and ARH20% for the caluculated digestion coefficients. Average digestibility and nutritive value of ARH were as follows; dry matter 18.91%, crude protein 47.05%, crude fat 100%, NFE23.16%, crude fiber 13.29%, DCP 3.47% and TDN13.67%.
(Fattening experiment)
The average daily gain throughout the entire period was as follows; group1 0.76kg, group2 0.74kg, group3 0.71kg and group4 0.78kg. The differences among these groups were not significant. There was no significant difference in conversion in each groups. However, conversion in the rice straw group was slightly higher than that of the ARH and rice hulls groups.
The digestibility of crude fiber in the ARH group was obviously lower than the other groups. However, crude fat was higher than all other groups. (P<.05) The eating time in the ARH group was significantly shorter than other groups. (P<.01) Therefore it seems that ARH is easier to eat than rice straw and rice hulls. The examinations of blood, serum, urine, rumen fluid and rumen papillary growth showed no significant differences in all groups. In the ARH and rice hulls groups, rumen parakeratosis was found and incidence of hepatic abscesses was found in some of them.
