The Japanese quail has been recognized as an excellent laboratory animal in the avian species. Many interesting varieties or mutants have been found and several useful strains for biological experiments have been established. Studies on the typing of red blood cells in Japanese quail has been limited. Recently, AMACHI and MITSUMOTO have tried typing with isoimmune sera. This method was not used in the present experiment, because it seemed difficult to obtain the specific antisera in adequate amount by isoimmunization of quail. It is known that extracts of certain plant seeds agglutinate the erythrocytes of various animals, including mankind. The effective factors are known as phytohemagglutinin (PHA) or lectin and some are in practical use for blood typing. Extracts prepared from 84 different plants including 39 species of Leguminosae were tested for their agglutinability against the red cells obtained from adult quail of 5 strains of different origins. Based on the result, these 84 extracts can be classified into four groups as follows;
1) The red cells of all quail tested were not aggiutinated.……36
2) The red cells of all quail tested were agglutinated.……39
3) The red cells of all quail tested were hemolyzed.……1
4) The red cells of some quail were agglutinated but the red cells of others were not agglutinated.……8
The last group involved Glycine max. (Daizu, Norimi and Tsurumame), Arachis hypogaea, Abermoschus esculentus, Dioscorea batatus, Pteridium aquilinum and Osmunda japonica. The group could be subdivided into two subgroups as follows; a) Regardless of sex, agglutination was observed only with the rad cells from certain quail……Arachis hypogaea, Dioscorea batatus, Pteridium aquilinum, Osmunda japonica, b) Only laying females can be divided into two groups, positive quail and negative ones, but the red cells of all males and non-laying females were agglutinated.……Glycine max. (Daizu, Norimi and Tsurumame), Ahermoschus esculentus.The latter was cold agglutinin but former was not.
