One hundred and nineteen cattle of four different breeds and ten calves bred from a translocation heterozygous bull were examined cytogenetically using the peripheral blood culturing technique previously described. The preparation of cultured cells was stained according to the Giemsa-banding method. One Japanese Black bull and eight calves out of his ten offsprings were found to be a translocation heterozygote with 2n=59 chromosomes. All the other cattle of four breeds were found to be normal. Eight calves with the translocation chromosome comprised 3 females, 1 male and 2 sets of heterosexual twins. The sex chromosome chimerism was found in 2 sets of the heterosexual twins. In one set of the twins all the cells of female origin had 2n=59 chromosomes with translocation, while the cells originating from a male calf had the normal complement of 2n=60 chromosomes. In another set of the twins all the cells of both female and male origins had 2n=59 chromosomes with translocation. The translocation found in the bull and his offsprings occurred between a large and a small telocentric chromosomes, forming a large submetacentric chromosome. This large submetacentric chromosome was revealed by the use of Giemsa-banding technique to be formed by centric fusion between Nos. 5 and 21 autosomes.
