Thirty four steers and 38 heifers consisting of pure Japanese Black and their 3/4 crosses between Holstein and three way crosses among Japanese Black, Holstein and Japanese Brown were fattened under same feeding condition and serially slaughtered. Every side carcass were dissected. Growth patterns of carcass tissues and their distributions in carcass were compared between sexes. Relative growth coefficients of the weights of muscle, fat, bone, and the ratios of muscle/bone and muscle/fat to muscle+bone weight did not differ significantly between sexes. The least squares means of the percentages of muscle and bone and the ratio of muscle/fat of steers were higher than those of heifers, but the carcass fat percentage and the ratio of muscle/bone at overall mean side carcass weight, and the fat weight at overall mean weight of muscle+bone in side carcass of steers were lower than those of heifers. The ralative growth coefficients of muscle, fat and bone in joints to their total tissue weight in side carcass differed between sexes in several joints. Distribution of each tissue in joints differed between sexes in several joints too, but the differences were small. When the muscle distribution was compared on the basis of standard muscle group weights, the abdominal muscle weight of heifers was higher than that of steers, and the weight of muscle groups of distal pelvic limb, proximal and distal thoracic limb, and neck and thorax were higher in steers than those of heifers.
