In order to determine the effects of high potassium intake on mineral metabolism in sheep, two trials were made. The first one was balance trial of minerals. Six sheep were alloted into three groups. Treatment lots were three; control (K, 0.98% in DM of ration), KCl (K, 2.72%), MDS-molasses distillers' soluble- (K, 3.73%). The design was a 3×3 latin square. The second one was conducted to find whether plasma mineral concentrations and blood acid-base balance could be changed in sheep fed with rations containing low (K, 3.73%) and high MDS (K, 5.06%) for 12 weeks. Two sheep were used in each group. No problem was found in animal health and no reduction of feed consumption was observed during experiments in every sheep. There was no obvious difference in plasma potassium concentration among three groups in trial 1, while it was significantly higher (P<0.01) in sheep fed with high MDS than in sheep fed with low MDS in trial 2. The highest concentration of plasma potassium was 37.3mg/100ml in high MDS. As heightening dietary potassium concentration, urine potassium excretion tended to increase (P<0.05). Fecal potassium excretion in MDS was lower than in control and KCl (P<0.05). Urine sodium excretion was significantly higher in two high potassium rations than in control (P<0.05), Adversely, as increasing dietary potassium concentration, fecal sodium excretion lowered (P<0.05). These results showed that apparent absorption and urine excretion of sodium were enhanced with the elevation of dietary potassium. Although it seems that urine and fecal excretion of magnesium were not affected by the change of dietary potassium concentration, plasma magnesium concentration significantly decreased (P<0.05) when dietary potassium increased. No definite difference was found in plasma magnesium level between sheep fed with low and high MDS rations in trial 2.
