Abstract

This experiment was carried out to study the effect of feeding amounts of fiber substance on heat increment.
Sawdust, which was added to basal ration, was used as a fiber substance. The feeding amounts of sawdust were from 0g to 43.3g per day per Kg0.75 of body weight for 60-day-old chicks and from 0g to 28.5g per day per Kg0.75 of body weight for 15-day-old chicks. Heat production was measured and heat increment of sawdust calculated.
Results obtained are as follows:
1) In the experiment made for 60 and 15-day-old chicks, metabolizable energy (M. E) content of sawdust decreased from 16% to 3% for the former and from 7% to 4% for the latter with the increase of the feeding amount of the sawdust.
2) Heat increment contained in M. E of sawdust increased from 26% to 193% for 60-dayold chicks and from 76% to 219% for 15-day-old chicks on the same conditions as mentioned above.
3) The result indicates that heat increment of fiber substance is influenced by the feeding amounts of it and the development of the digestive tract of the chicks. And it is also evident that the energy consumed in the passing process of indigestible matters through the alimentary tract is influenced by the feeding mount of the fiber substance.
