Two practical-types and a semipurified-type diets were used as basal diet to determine the effect of the composition of basal diet on the metabolizable energy (ME) values of feed ingredients for starting chicks. Test ingredients were corn, milo, soybean meal, rapeseed meal and defatted rice bran. The test ingredient was substituted either whole diet in the practical basal diets or glucose in the semipurified basal diet at the level of 40%. The ME values of corn, milo and soybean meal were not significantly different among these basal diets. But the ME values of rapeseed meal and defatted rice bran were significantly higher when the semipurified basal diet was used than when the practical basal diets were used.The ME values of glucose determined by the practical basal diets were similar to those obtained by HILL et al. The ME values of four formulated feeds containing various levels of corn, soybean meal, rapeseed meal and defatted rice bran were determined, and calculated from the ME values of the ingredients composed of the diets which determined by using each of the three basal diets. In all diets, the ME values calculated from the ME values of ingredients which determined by using two practical basal diets were very similar to the observed ME values, the calculated ME value averaging 99.6 to 100% of the obseved ME.But the ME values calculated from the ME values of ingredients which determined with the semipurified basal diet were consistently higher than the observed ME values, the calculated ME value averaging 103.4% of the observed ME.It was concluded that a corn-soy practical diet is superior to a glucose containing semipurified diet as basal diet for the ME assay.
