To investigate the use of natural differences in 13C/12C ratio as a tracer, we studied variations of 13C concentration in diet, feces, blood and milk from dairy cattle and their changes against time after changing the diet.Feces, blood and milk samples were taken from 3 cattle fed a δC3-diet (mainly Italian ryegrass wafer:δ13C=-22‰) and 2 cattle fed C4-diet (mainly corn silage:δ=-16‰).The δ13C values of feces had a tendency to be lower than the estimated δ13C value of indigestible diet in the C3-diet group, while in the C4-group, the formers were slightly higher than the latters. The δA13C values of blood and milk were higher than the estimated δ13C value of digestible diet in both groups. When the diet was changed from a C3-diet to a C4-diet, the δ13C values of feces shifted within 5 day to values similar of the C4-diet.The δ13C values of milk showed a similar tendency. These suggest that the δ13C/12C ratio of milk quickly responds that of digesta. The halflife of carbon in the plasma examined was about 15.4 days, which almost agreed with the half-life of plasma protein (reference value).Meanwhile the 13C values of red blood cells reamarked unchanged which might be due to the longer life span, compared of the feeding period of the C3-diet.
