The effects of prolactin (PRL) on the weight of the testes vascular bodies and cloacal gland of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were studied In the first trial PRL and CB 154 (2-bromo-α-ergocriptine) were injected intramuscularly in normal adult quail But the weight of the testes was not influenced by the administration of either PRL or CB 154 PRL had no effects on the weight of the vascular bodies and cloacal gland but CB 154 tended to decrease the weight of these organs more than via normal controls although the differences were not significant In the second trial PRL and/or small doses of testosterone (TP) were injected into the castrated quail No appreciable differences were found in the weight of the vascular bodies and cloacal gland between PRL-injected and non-injected groups and between TP-injected and PRL + TPinjected groups In the third trial TP and/or CB 154 were injected into the castrated quail The administration of CB 154 had no effect on the weight of the vascular bodies and cloacal gland However when TP was injected after CB 154 had been administered previously a significant decrease in the weight of the vascular bodies and a slight decrease in the cloacal gland were observed as compared with those of birds injected with TP alone The results of these experiments suggest that in Japanese quail PRL has no effect on the weight of the testes but it may exert an augmenting effect on androgen which increases the weight of the vascular bodies and cloacal gland.
