The uteri of ten normal postpartum sows and the retained products of conception were observed in the abdomen via an ultrasonic B-mode linear electronic scanner. Postpartum involution of the uterus was examined by changes in the uterine images surrounded by subctaneous tissues and gas in the intestine and bladder via the ultrasonogram.The developed mammary gland and the urine-filled bladder made observation of the uterine image difficult occasionally.The scale of the uterine image on the ultrasonogram decreased rapidly within 10 days after parturition, then hardly changed during the following lactation period and early postweaning.In the lactating sow on day 8 after parturition, the retained products of conception containing a mummified fetus were observed ultrasonically in the uterus.The fetus was detected by the echogenic image of the vertebra but the shape and interior of the fetal body were not clear. The scale of the uterine image remained large, which is evidence forward diagnosing the case as abnormal after parturition.These results show that ultrasonography gives information on the postpartum involution of the uterus in sows and is valuable in discovering retained products of conception in the uterus.
