The two lines of mice selected for high (HA) and low (LA) levels of aggressiveness were gonadectomized and treated with androgen. And then, changes and differences of aggressiveness between the lines were examined. 1) When five different degrees of TP (testosterone propinnate) dosages from 0 to 600μg per day were given to the castrated male mice, their aggressiveness was reduced by castration and recovered to the level before castration by giving 150μg TP. On the contrary, higher dosages reduced their aggressiveness. The inverted U-shape relationship was found between dosages and aggressiveness. 2) Castrated male mice of HA showed significantly higher scores than those of LA. Giving TP extended further difference in aggressiveness between the lines. 3) As a result of compairing scores between the two lines of female mice whose aggressiveness was caused by BRONSON and DESJARDXNS' method6), HA was significantly higher than LA. 4) The above results indicate that aggressiveness is relative to the amount of androgen and suggest that the difference in aggressiveness between the two lines is caused not only by androgen but also by other factor. It is possible to speculate that the selection for aggressiveness resulted in the functional difference of central nervous system.
