Abstract

Differences in racing times by thoroughbred horses on turf and dirt-course were studied statistically, with reference to genetic background. Only the racing result data for 3-year-old horses under good racing condition were used; subdivisions for classification were birth-place of sire, sex of offspring, and turf or dirt-course. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1) Significant differences in racing time between turf and dirt-course were observed in horses whether the sire was foreign-bred or domestic-bred. The turf-course time was shorter than the dirt-course time. Turf-course times varied less than those for dirt, except in the case of 1, 400m by horses with a foreign sire. The longer the distance, the smaller the coefficient of variation for the turf-course. These suggest a difference in environmental factors between the two types of course. 2) The correlation of times between turf and dirt-course for the same horse was almost always significant and ranged from 0.218-0.574.The correlation at shorter distances was greater than at longer distances.
