Description

The present experiment investigated the existence of a glucoreceptor mechanism in the digestive system and its role in controlling feed intake in chickens. Following the intra-duodenal infusions of glucose the birds paused a meal and their feed consumption decreased, and the inhibition level of feed intake was correlated with the amount of infused glucose. After the intra-abdominal infusions, the birds ceased eating with some latency and the inhibition level of feed intake was higher than that after the intra-duodenal infusions. These results would suggest the existence of a peripheral chemoreceptor energostatically regulating feed intake in the digestive system of chickens.
