The purpose of this experiment was to determine metabolizable energy values for quantitative studies in energy nutrition and for evaluation of feeding materials.
The metabolizable energy of grains and grain products, commonly used in Japan, has been estimated for growing chicken using glucose as the reference standard and correcting for nitrogen retentiona ccording to the method of HILL and ANDERSON.
Metabolizable energy values were capable of a high degree of precision, replicate estimates agreeing within a coefficient of variation of ±2.5%. The correction for nitogen retention introduced a relatively small correcting adjustment. Two different nitrogen correction factors of 8.22 and 8.73 Kcal per gram of nitrogen were employed. The difference of these two factors did not affect a set of the metabolizable energy values.
While satisfactory metabolizable energy values for domestic barley was determined by calculation from the proximate analysis and digestibility data using surgically altered birds for separate collection of fecal and urinary excreta, it was found that this method was not completely satisfactory for the metabolizable energy estimation of other feedstuffs.
