Abstract

To clarify the characteristic of the utilization of ingested feed of Japanese field vole, concentration of blood glucose, production and consumption of VFA in its digestive organs were compared with those of the mouse (NC strain). The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) Average blood glucose concentration was 61.6±16.5mg/dl in the vole, and was half the level in mouse. 2) Though the concentrations of total VFA were only 8. 8 and 10. 1mM in fundic gland region and pyloric stomach, respectively, those in esophageal sac and caecum were 42.4 and 62. 2mM, respectively. The molar percentage of acetic, propionic, butyric and valeric acid in esophageal sac was 44:34:15:7. And that in caecum was 69:11:20:0. 3) Consumption of propionic or butyric acid in esophageal and caecal mucous membrane of the vole was higher than that of mouse. The VFA metabolism patterns in vole liver were similar to those of domestic ruminants.
