It has been known that the postnatal development of submaxillary glands of the mouse is under the influence of androgens. However, little is known about the changes in androgen concentrations in submaxillary glands during postnatal development. This report deals with the measurement of testosterone (T) and 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) concentrations in submaxillary glands of the mouse at various ages and the comparison of the steroid profile in submaxillary gland with the profiles observed in blood and brain. Male ICR mice aged 1 day to 10 weeks were used. Submaxillary glands, brains and serum samples were assayed for T and DHT by radioimmunoassay. In submaxillary glands, a high concentration of T was found at birth. T concentrations abruptly decreased between birth and the 3rd week, which was followed by rapid increase to 7 weeks of age and by decrease at 10 weeks of age. On the other band, DHT concentrations continued to increase from birth to 7 weeks of age, except for a decrease at 1 week of age. At 10 weeks of age, DHT concentrations decreased to the value approximately equal to that at birth. Serum T concentrations followed a developmental pattern similar to that in submaxillary glands, except that at 1 week of age, the concentration was lower than at 7 weeks of age. Serum DHT was slightly elevated at birth and 7 weeks of age and barely detectable at the other ages. In brains, both T and DHT concentration values were approaching or below the sensitivity limit of detection.
