147 strains of lactic acid bacteria were isolated from the follwing three groups, classified by quality of Italian ryegrass silage; high moisture•good quality (group I), high moisture - poor quality (group II) and medium moistrure (group III). Flieg's mark for group I, II and III was 80.8, 12.1, 84.0, respectively. Three groups contained four species of cocci and twelve species of rods. Out of 147 strains from three groups, the incidences of cocci and rods ranged from 10.4 to 18.4% and 81.6 to 89.6%. Group I included mainly Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus delbruechii, Lactobacillus brevis, and Leuconostoc mesenteroides. The dominant species in group II were Lactobacillus coryniformis, Lactobacillus helveticus, L. acidophilus, and Pediococcus acidilactici, whereas Lactobacillus curvatus and L. acidophilus were dominant in group III. The homofermentative species in group II and III were present in higher percentages than these found in group I. Almost all lactic acid bacteria isolated from groups I, II and III produced mainly DL lactic acid, and a low percentage of species produced the L (+) isomeric form. The proportion of D (-) form in group I was higher than that of group II and III. These results may explain that different species of lactic acid bacteria are the factors that influence quality of silage, fermentative type and lactic acid isomer.
