Abstract

Heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum L-137 (HK L-137), a strain isolated from fermented food, has been shown to be a potent inducer of interleukin (IL)-12 which leads to a T helper (Th) 1-type immune response and subsequent anti-allergic, anti-tumor, or anti-viral effects in mice models. The present study was undertaken to examine the effectiveness of HK L-137 on the growth performance and productivity in Hinai-jidori chicken which is one of the most popular slow-growing meat-type chicken (Jidori) in Japan. 0-day-old Hinai-Jidori chicks were divided into control group and HK L-137 group and were raised until 23-wk-old. The control group chickens were fed only the mixed feed during the experiment period. In experiment 1, HK L-137 group chickens were fed the diet (same as the control) in which added 2mg/kg HK L-137 for 112 days from 0-wk-old to 16-wk-old. In experiment 2, HK L-137 group chickens were fed the diet (same as the control) in which added 10mg/kg HK L-137 for 28 days from 0-wk-old to 4-wk-old and were fed the diet in which added 2mg/kg HK L-137 for 84 days from 4-wk-old to 17-wk-old. HK L-137 group had significantly heavier body weight than control group at 17-wk-old in both experiments. The body weight at 23-wk-old and daily weight gain and feed conversion rate from 0-wk-old to 23-wk-old of HK L-137 group were superior to control group in both experiments. HK L-137 group showed higher production score than that of control group and profitability per bird increased. For immune function, the interferon (IFN)-γ mRNA expression level in the spleen of HK L-137 group showed higher tendency comparison with control group. These results suggest that HK L-137 is effective on the growth performance and increase the productivity in Hinai-jidori chicken.
