説明

A study was carried out to determine the developmental changes occuring in transferrin (Tf) concentrations in light-breed horses, and whether there were any relationships between these changes and iron metabolism or immunoglobulin concentrations. Samples were taken at intervals from six horses, and Tf and immunoglobulin (IgG and IgM) concentrations were measured by single radial immunodiffusion test, and serum iron concentraion was determined by TCA precipitation. Each sample was also subjected to two-dimensional (2-D) electrophoresis. It was clarified that Tf protein became iron-saturated or close to a condition of iron saturation just after birth and around one month of age. Peaks of Tf and serum iron concentration were observed at these ages, and this means also the time that the total iron-binding capacity was increased most. On the other hand, IgG concentration was decreased lowest during one to three months after birth which Tf concentration was about two times more than that of adult horses. It was thought that Tf protein at this time made up for the decreased defense against infection due to the low level of immunoglobulin. From these results, it was thought that the developmental changes in Tf concentration during the growth of horses were part of a phenomenon in which the functional actions of Tf protein were remarkably increased in relation to the defense against infections and growing up of iron carrier ability in vivo.
