Two experiments were conducted to study the effects of treatment which tended to increase dry matter (DM) intake on the chewing activity in sheep. In experiment 1, four wethers were fed untreated (RS), ammoniated (ARS), steamed (SRS) or ammoniated after steam treatment (SARS) rice straw ad libitum in a 4×3 Yuden square design to compare the chewing activity during eating and rumination. The time spent per day eating SRS and SARS tended to be less than that with RS and ARS. The time spent per day on rumination and the daily number of rumination boli with SRS and SARS were slightly higher than those with the other straw. There was no difference in the daily chewing time among treatments, while the unitary chewing time based on the DM intake tended to be less with treated straw, especially for SARS, than that with RS. The unitary chewing time based on the neutral detergent fiber intake with SRS remained at a similar level to that with RS. In experiment 2, the animals fasted until normal rumination activity approached zero and then were fed a single 680g (DM) meal of RS or ARS. The normal rumination time produced by feeding with a single meal of ARS was significantly shorter than that produced by feeding with RS.
