説明

The grazing unit and the grazing pause unit for the data logger method were developed, in order to measure the number of jaw movements during grazing and rumination. The grazing unit was made to measure the number of jaw movements every 1 minute, that is, the biting rate(bites/min) during grazing, or the chewing rate (chews/min) during rumination. The grazing pause unit measured the number of pauses (above 2sec or 3sec) of jaw movements during grazing and rumination. The number of pauses during rumination is the number of boluses per minute. A displacement sensor (acarbon-filled respiratory tube) which was attached to the jaw leads to the two units. The grazing unit made it possible to calculate the number of changes of electric resistance of the displacement sensor. Walking (steps) was measured by this unit, because the displacement sensor was connected between a foreleg and chest part of the chest band. Three data loggers were carried on the back of grazing cattle on pasture. The number of jaw movements and pause of jaw movements, heart rate, head position, posture and steps were recorded simultaneously over a 24-hour period for 2 days. Grazing time, rumination time, biting rate, chewing rate, total bites, total chews, chews per bolus, steps, and standing and lying time were calculated by a personal computer. From the present results, it was suggested that the grazing and grazing pause units developed for the data logger method could be used to examine grazing and rumination behaviour in detail (Table 2).
