Abstract

In order to clarify the mechanism of indoor air quality, it is an important point to measure correctly the emission rate from the building materials that are one of the sources of indoor air contamination. A lot of measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission rates form building materials using a complete mixing type chamber according to ASTM, ECA and ENV have been reported. However, there are very few reports on the measurement of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) emitted from materials. Because SVOCs emitted from material are adsorbed on the internal surface of the test chamber under actual room temperature, it is extremely difficult to measure the emission amount from materials by the emission test chamber method. In this paper, the authors develop a thermal desorption test chamber method that can measure correctly the emission rate of SVOCs released fom materials. The measurement results of SVOCs emitted from building materials and house electric appliances are reported by using the new method.
