Abstract
We investigated a quantitative and qualitative restriction of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) , especially focusing on very mild Alzheimerʼs disease (AD).
&nb We analyzed IADL functions in residents aged 75 years and older who participated in the Kurihara project, including Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) 0 (healthy, n = 211) and CDR 0.5 (MCI, n = 295), the latter including very mild AD (n = 91). Quantitative IADL functions were evaluated using the Lawton scale (8 items), and qualitative IADL functions were assessed using our original scale (27 items).
For the Lawton IADL assessment, we found that only one item (shopping) was disturbed in the very mild AD group compared to the healthy group, whereas 4 items (shopping, food preparation, mode of transportation, and responsibility for own medication) were declined in the CDR 0.5 group.
For the assessment by our original scales, 19 items were disturbed in the very mild AD group compared to the healthy group, whereas 25 items were declined in the CDR 0.5 group.
Our results suggest that older adults with MCI showed quantitative and qualitative restriction of IADL, however very mild AD showed only qualitative restriction of IADL.
