Abstract

We observed the foraging behavior of rats in the straight corridor. The corridor was 1600mm long, one end was patch and the opposite end was nest. Three subjects were trained bar-pressing response under FI-2 sec schedule at patch. The food items weighed 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5g, and one of them was randomly delivered as a reinforcer. In the first stage, animals' tendency to carry food to the nest increased as the size of those items increased (Figure 1). In the second stage, electric shocks were presented at patch under VT-10 min schedule in addition to the procedure of the first stage. Presentation of shocks enhanced food carrying compared with the first stage (Figure 1). The results indicate the validity of central place foraging model in rodents on which the forager adopt an optimal trade-off between item profitability and exposure predation.
